Description

This double helping of Atlas crime features the complete runs of  The Witness  and  Caught . The Witness is always watching and the criminal is always caught in these two anthology titles filled with strange and deadly tales of bad choices and dark alleyways. In 1948, Marvel’s Timely Comics mixed Street & Smith’s Shadow  with radio’s Mysterious Traveler and relaunched an earlier Golden Age costumed crime fighter as the publisher’s own omniscient narrator of darkly ironic stories of urban The Witness! Across eight action-packed stories (including a very early entry by future Marvel star Gene Colan), The Witness spun tales of greed, death, and comeuppance such as “With Intent to Kill!” “The Million Dollar Man-Trap!” “Diamond of Destiny!” and “Fate Fixed a Fight!” Also seen here are three rarely seen earlier Witness stories from Timely’s Mystic Comics in 1941-42. Caught (1956-57) presented five issues of brisk, suspenseful morality tales behind John Severin covers, with interior art by the cream of the Atlas crop, including Joe Maneely, John Romita, Angelo Torres, Mort Drucker, Bernard Krigstein, Reed Crandall, Syd Shores, Don Heck, and Bernard Bailey. Stories include “The Betrayer!”, “One is a Coward!”, Ruthless!”, “Man on the Run!”, “The Spider Strikes!”, and “Dead End!.” Unseen for nearly 75 years and never before reprinted, The Witness and Caught are historical cross-sections of two distinct periods of Marvel’s long crime comics history.
